When I was writing for this album I thought a lot about how to define a space with sound. I tried to be honest with what I heard without adhering to particular genre expectations, whether that meant rocking out over four chords, having largely improvised sections, or letting a melody speak for itself. Simon Jermyn, Nathan Ellman-Bell and I have played together in many different contexts over the years in New York City and I had their sounds in mind as I was composing. I always admired Chris Marion’s sensibility as an arranger and string player. Coming from a classical background and violin being my first instrument, it felt natural to layer orchestral textures to complement the trio.

Listening back to these tracks now, a year into the pandemic and three years after they have been recorded, does feel a little nostalgic. They represent what could have been and also remind me of the ways I have changed musically and otherwise. Nevertheless, these sounds capture something specific that I still resonate with and I am delighted to share them with a world of listeners.

You might know Charlotte Greve as the leader and saxophonist of the "Lisbeth Quartett". What she does on this "Wood River" album is something completely different, however. The six songs she contributed are far away from what could be called jazz - it's just the saxophone sound occasionally kicking in that triggers memories of her older works. Otherwise, alternative rock with avantgarde traits probably is the best description. Tracks 4 (by Tommy Crane) and 6 (by Simon Jermyn) fit in nicely. Sven B. Schreiber (sbs)
